Subsea Emergency Release

Problem Statement

A number of activities during subsea drilling operations leave the rig vulnerable to sudden deterioration in weather conditions and "Time To Make Safe" can often mean activities cannot begin without a sufficiently long weather window available. A Subsea Emergency Release mechanism would allow a drilling rig to disconnect from a subsea well during casing running operations, significantly shortening the Time To Make Safe and reducing the required weather window for running casing. This would allow casing operations to proceed in a more timely manner increasing the utilisation of the rig whilst also providing a new safety mechanism against scenarios that risk total catastrophic loss.
