I'm a UK based industrial entrepreneur (when doing my own projects) and an engineering consultant (when helping others do theirs). Sometimes I write and setup the design, engineering, assurance, testing and manufacturing processes and programmes for large organisations getting new things to market, and sometime I do some strategic contract R&D if there's a problem without a solution. I've working in heavy industry (nuclear, subsea, oil & gas, defence) and also know my way around computers (servers, HPC clusters, AI research, UI). I've lead a few different teams big and small, strong and weak and had one decent startup.
This is really a place to publish some stuff so I can link people back to past work and projects without repeating myself too much. Or maybe it's just a fishing exercise for future collaborators in interesting projects? If anything below is remotely interesting to you I would probably like to hear from you. Contact details at the bottom of the page.
Here are a few projects I've worked on in my own time:
Project 7 - Stratsor Limited, I created a small company with my kids (everyone owns 25%), we import consumer electronics, distribute them worldwide and sell them online. Stratsor Limited
Project 6 - Bletchley Point is a data science project to create an extreme high fidelity sociodemographic model of the UK population. Bletchley Point
Project 5 - New Future is an exchange and forum of public policy proposals for the UK. The site provides tools and methods for developing public policy and how to assess their impact and value.
Project 4 - I volunteered as a football coach for 8 years, coaching my sons team. This was a lot of fun but often more difficult than it seemed, I built a website for football analytics. It's called fantactico.com
Project 3 - A bare metal bootloader. Can I write an extended bootloader that launches a computer into an extended run time environment that can run source code without an operating system
Project 2 - Zairk, an AI system for your home that works like "computer" in Star Trek
Project 1 - Hot Rings, build an immersible thermoelectric generator
Some things I invented and the story behind it:
Use of Patents - Some information on how I think of patents and what I've done with them in the past.
Method for Assessing Fluid Flow - A method that allows you to measure the flow rates of the various components of a multiphase fluid flowing inside a closed pipe.
Annular BOP - An iris style annular BOP that allows for novel profiles to be produced for suspending pipe in a well bore.
Well Control - A device that allows you to anchor your subsea well to the sea floor, land a BOP on it and begin drilling operations with pressure control already established.
Subsea Dilling Anchor - A device that allows you to anchor your subsea well to the sea floor, land a BOP on it and begin drilling operations with pressure control already established.
Thermoelectric Generator - A device that harvests the produced heat from a subsea oil and gas production system and generates electrical power for local subsea equipments.
Preloading Device - Slimline Rigid Lockdown Wellhead by Aker Solutions. This was a mechanism for lockinng two large cylinders together. Designed a product with 2,000 tonnes of preload.
Variable Split Ring - whilst designing and building subsea wellheads we used some very large split rings. This made it much easier.
Non Uniform Flow By Centraliser - This was a design feature that allowed for subsea tools to have a higher tensile capacity.
Subsea Emergency Release - Subsea oil wells are built with subsea running tools, this was a way for a drilling rig to disconnect from the seabed quickly if the weather turned bad.
