Informal biography

Stuart Ellison is a mechanical and systems engineer and the founder and CEO of Orkora, a company developing large-scale offshore nuclear power stations that export multi-gigawatt firm power to national grids via HVDC.

I’ve been a UK-based industrial entrepreneur (on my own projects) and an engineering consultant (when helping others do theirs). I’ve worked in heavy industry for most of my career: nuclear, subsea, oil & gas and defence. On the software side I’ve built and deployed industrial machine learning systems, UI tools and automation for complex engineering workflows.

I’ve led teams of different sizes and strengths, written and implemented design, engineering, assurance, testing and manufacturing programmes, and invented a number of patented devices for subsea oil and gas systems and multiphase flow measurement.

This site is partly a portfolio and partly a notebook. It’s a place to publish toolboxes, home-brew projects and a few essays so I can point people at past work without repeating myself too much.

Home Brew Projects

Here are a few projects I've worked on in my own time:

  • Project 7Stratsor Limited, I created a small company with my kids (everyone owns 25%), we import consumer electronics, distribute them worldwide and sell them online. Stratsor Limited

  • Project 5New Future is an exchange and forum of public policy proposals for the UK. The site provides tools and methods for developing public policy and how to assess their impact and value.
  • Project 4I volunteered as a football coach for 8 years, coaching my sons team. This was a lot of fun but often more difficult than it seemed, I built a website for football analytics. It's called fantactico.com
  • Project 3A bare metal bootloader. Can I write an extended bootloader that launches a computer into an extended run time environment that can run source code without an operating system
  • Project 2Zairk, an AI system for your home that works like "computer" in Star Trek

Inventions

Some things I invented and the story behind it:

  • Use of PatentsSome information on how I think of patents and what I've done with them in the past.
  • Method for Assessing Fluid FlowA method that allows you to measure the flow rates of the various components of a multiphase fluid flowing inside a closed pipe.
  • Annular BOPAn iris style annular BOP that allows for novel profiles to be produced for suspending pipe in a well bore.
  • Well ControlA device that allows you to anchor your subsea well to the sea floor, land a BOP on it and begin drilling operations with pressure control already established.
  • Subsea Dilling AnchorA device that allows you to anchor your subsea well to the sea floor, land a BOP on it and begin drilling operations with pressure control already established.
  • Thermoelectric GeneratorA device that harvests the produced heat from a subsea oil and gas production system and generates electrical power for local subsea equipments.
  • Preloading DeviceSlimline Rigid Lockdown Wellhead by Aker Solutions. This was a mechanism for lockinng two large cylinders together. Designed a product with 2,000 tonnes of preload.
  • Variable Split RingWhilst designing and building subsea wellheads we used some very large split rings. This made it much easier.
  • Non Uniform Flow By CentraliserThis was a design feature that allowed for subsea tools to have a higher tensile capacity.
  • Subsea Emergency ReleaseSubsea oil wells are built with subsea running tools, this was a way for a drilling rig to disconnect from the seabed quickly if the weather turned bad.
